10 October 2010

Ok, so much has happened since I last logged this blog.  I have been living about 90% Paleo since the summer Paleo challenge (Aug 2010).  Aside from the dairy component, Paleo isn’t dramatically different than what I was living the last 7-8 years (South Beach Diet).  I haven’t had rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes in my house for about a decade, so the starch was not the issue.  The issue is fake sugar.   Good gawd I ingest a lot more of this stuff than I thought.  When not in the throws of a Paleo challenge, I put about 7 packs o’ fake sugar in a pitcher of iced tea.  Might sound high, but this is an improvement over the 9 packs that it used to be.  Since going Paleo, I have also substituted honey and/or real sugar for the fake sugar in my hot tea.  All in all, sugar aside, my diet might not have appeared to change dramatically from the point of view of an outsider, but I know that the quality of the food I intake has dramatically improved.  Only twice since January 2010 have I eaten veggies from a can (two of those little single-servings of petite French peas).  Nowadays, I eat organic veggies when I can (farmers market, whole foods, harris teeter), and just fresh veggies when I can’t (giant).  Exceptions include the frozen spinach and broccoli that I use in my breakfast casserole.  Same goes for meat (and eggs).  Generally, all my meats are organic and grass fed and free range.  The exception there is the Boar’s Head deli turky meat that I chop up on my lunch salads.  Other random improvements:  I only eat dark chocolate with 60% cocoa content or higher.  Not too bad, right?  I may never achieve a 100% Paleo lifestyle, and frankly I really don’t think I care to, but I feel this is pretty good for now.

3 May 2010

Well, I have been away from strict Paleo for some time now – almost 2.5 months.  In that time, I have been traveling for work a LOT.  Starting in February, I have traveled every other week (and on one not-so-fantastic occasion, I traveled two weeks straight) to Colorado for client work.  This has been hell on many fronts, not the least of which is the inconsistent CrossFit WODing and Paleo dieting.  The end result is that I am up 6 pounds, weaker in WODs, and nothing fits.  AARGH!  So, I will turn it up a notch somewhere around Thursday (yes, that would be the day after Cinco de Mayo) of this week and try to ween myself off of Christy’s Diet Baddies before the next PCF Paleo Challenge begins in mid-May.  BTW, Christy’s Diet Baddies = skim milk, dark chocolate, fake sugar, Grey Goose.  Wish me luck!

Day #30 – 8 February 2010

Pre-WOD: hot tea w/ coconut milk, 2 Tbsp almond butter

B’fast: 2 deviled eggs (mayo, mustard, Old Bay), 1/4 avocado, 1 carrot

Snack: hot tea, 1 c. macadamia/cashew/almond nuts

Lunch: 1/2 c. cucumber w/ Paleo dressing, 1/2 lb. shrimp cocktail, non-Paleo cocktail sauce, 1 diet coke

Dinner: 1 c. tuna salad (mayo, HB egg, Old Bay), 1 can green beans, 1 Tbsp fish oil

Notes:  Monday – Had a diet coke and STILL fell asleep for 2 hours after lunch.  Could have been the whooping I received at last night’s WOD and following it up with this morning’s WOD.  Had a can of green beans for dinner (no fresh veggies left in the frig in anticipation of the work trip to CO that got postponed due to snow) and thought it tasted horrible.  There was no taste.  I like the taste of taste.  I will never eat a can of green beans again!

Day #29 – 7 February 2010

Pre-B’fast: hot tea w/ coconut milk, 2 tsp almond butter

B’fast: 2 scram eggs, 1/2 avocado, 1 c. asparagus/zucchini, 1 Tbsp fish oil

Lunch: 1/3 sweet potato, 2 c. cabbage/sausage soup, 1 Tbsp fish oil, iced tea

Dinner: 1 serv. chicken, 1 c. roasted asparagus/zucchini, 1 Tbsp fish oil

Post-WOD: 1 c. chicken broth, 1/2 c. cashews

Notes: Sunday – I weighed myself this morning and gained 4 pounds this week.  Since my WOD schedule and diet have not dramatically changed otherwise, I attribute the gain to the sweet potatoes.  So, no more sweet potatoes for me!  At least not as a regular diet item.
